$5 Capped Draped Bust

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 4658
1807 $5 Capped Draped Bust. Bust left. . BD-8, Breen-6453, Miller-101. PCGS graded MS-62. CAC Approved. Nicely toned. Well preserved with smooth, velvety golden luster and original orange-gold shades. This is a strongly struck example, with nice detail to all the important high points. In fact, the eagle's neck and shield detail compares favorably with some in much higher grades. This area of John Reich's design tended to lie opposite the high cap folds on Liberty and so often resulted in weak strikes. But not so here, the coin is outstanding in all areas. A gleaming fresh 1807 Capped Bust Left half eagle. The reverse die that struck the coin was later combined with two overdated and one normal obverse in 1808. Pop 43; 72 finer (PCGS # 8101) .

Historic note: Although the estimated mintage in 1807 is greater than 50,000 half eagles, it has been understood for a long while that perhaps as few as 3% of the original number exist in collections today. By far, most were exported or subsequently melted.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

1836 $5 Classic Head. PCGS graded MS-63. Choice and frosty, with delicate toning. This head style has the first curl, at upper left, much smaller than previous styles. In comparing the various dates, Liberty's head is slightly smaller than before. This was the final modification prepared by William Kneass (who had suffered a stroke the year before), with Christian Gobrecht taking over the job of die preparation the next year.

The Classic Head quarter eagles of 1834-39 are popular to collect by date since all are relatively affordable. Those in choice Mint State, however, are in another class altogether. When a lovely MS63 like this presents itself, a specimen whose deeply lustrous, subtle medium yellow gold color attracts notice, bidders respond. The strike detail, we should add, is crisp around the borders, and also so at the centers, this being noteworthy. No tarnish areas or deep abrasions. In summation, this is one of the choicest appearing 1836 quarter eagles available presently. It will stand up well in a specialist's collection. Further, it would make a fine addition to a choice gold Type Set (PCGS # 8174) .
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

1838 $5 Classic Head. . Breen-6515, small arrows, large 5, TES widely spaced with the talons shorter and thinner. Rare. NGC graded MS-61. CAC Approved. Mostly untoned. This piece displays attractive frosty-golden color over the abrasion-free surfaces. We could go on an on about the luster since it really is something special. What's more, there are virtually no marks. Next, a word or two about strike: this piece is struck with the controlled precision one expects from a gold piece made at the Philadelphia Mint. The devices throughout stand front and center among its peers for exciting detail. Pop 29; 51 finer (PCGS # 8176) .

Aesthetically tempting, as fine a looking coin in its grade as ever found, with full strike, and all the while saturated with close to 95% bright golden bloom. There is little in the way of toning. Struck with exactitude rarely found on a Classic Head $5 gold piece of 1834-38. Pop 107; 87 finer (PCGS # 8176) .

1840-D $5 Liberty. Tall D. NGC graded MS-61. A well struck example shimmering with frosty mint luster. Some scattered light marks, none too serious. Light golden-yellow color. The 1840-D half eagle is the first branch mint half eagle from Dahlonega with the D mintmark on the reverse. It would remain in this location until the end of the Liberty half eagle series (1908). 1840-D is a key coin for its rarity as well as judged in an historical light. The surfaces display even satin luster that is found on the few high grade survivors. Sharp details are also convincing, without even a sign of the later soft, mushiness that would form the bulk of the commoner 1850's-decade pieces from this mint. Abrasions are also held to a minimum, while eye appeal eclipses a more typical specimen. Attractive in all ways. Only 22,896 coins struck. Pop 5; 5 finer, 4 in 62, 1 in 63 (PCGS # 8198) .

1841-D $5 Liberty. Small D. NGC graded MS-61. A well struck example, light golden-yellow in color with plenty of frosty mint luster intact. Only 29,392 minted. Rich natural shades enhance the brilliant, frosty surface of this attractive early D-mint strike. 1841-D in Mint condition is an extremely important opportunity for the specialist. Two reverses are known, one with a tall mintmark (usually described as Medium D) being extremely rare, and the other with much smaller mintmark being the more plentiful. This small mintmark example is one of the few surviving in Mint State, per the NGC census: Pop 7; 12 finer, 5 in 62, 4 in 63, 1 in 64, 2 in 65 (PCGS # 8204) .

1842 $5 Liberty. Large letters. NGC graded MS-64 PQ. Old holder, NGC serial number 501757-003. One of the finest known. This exceptionally pleasing MS64 example has rich reddish gold patina over each side with subtle accents of yellow gold. Far from an average specimen of its decade or even a better-than-average one, this is a well-struck example with razor-sharp stars, hair, eagle, and other key details. It has no bothersome abrasions or points of wear, either, or copper spotting. Not in the least. The coin is spectacular! All this is but a portion of the coin's superlative virtues. We will assume that bidders recognize the coin's rarity and high quality and will enter strong bids, since a strong price realized really does put the piece into perspective. 1843-D $5 Liberty. Medium D. Our grade is sharpness of Uncirculated, lightly burnished. A needle sharp strike, in fact it has the look of a "specimen striking." Someone lightly buffed this coin long ago with a jeweler's cloth; all lightly toned. Doug Winter observed of the 1843-D that "This is one of the best manufactured Dahlonega half eagles. It is possible to locate an example that is well struck, lustrous, and attractively toned. Finding one with clean surfaces, however, is quite challenging." Although the surfaces of this example are not perfect, it still seems to meet the needs of the numismatic marketplace (PCGS # 8215) .

1844-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Very well struck with traces of semi reflective surfaces still evident about the outer devices. What is revealed here is primarily lustrous light to medium gold to yellow gold surfaces. They display some iridescence. The devices were sharply struck. The 1844-D is of medium rarity within the D-mint dates of the 1840s, but scarcer as it nears full Mint condition. A genuinely pleasing example of the date. Pop 39; 18 finer (PCGS # 8221) .

1846-D/D $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. Well struck and ablaze with shimmering mint luster. All is enhanced by the lovely golden-yellow mint color. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. Pop 7; 4 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 8229) .

This variety has a very sharply doubled mintmark, and is in demand from those who are intrigued by similar die blunders among all denominations. The D/D variety is more plentiful than the perfect mintmark, although the latter is not nearly as interesting.
Large D mintmark is sharply doubled with the initial impression much too high and buried beneath the branch stem. The final impression is in the appropriate position with the result that this second punch overlaps the bottom third of the initial punch.

1849-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. PCGS holder 12805158. Only 64,823 pieces minted. Unusually well struck on a problem-free planchet. Struck in natural light greenish-yellow gold. Certified as MS-61 by PCGS, this stands as one of the few known Mint State examples of the scarce 1849-C issue. Glowing with honest luster, it compares favorably in its amount of eye appeal with a coin a point or two higher on the grading scale. Beyond that, in the crowded theater of rare C and D mint gold of which soft strikes abound, the details are well struck, including the coronet and hair of Liberty and the eagle's feathers including those at the neck, all contributing to its superior status on a Liberty $5 gold piece from Charlotte Mint. The fields are lustrous and free of all but the most minute abrasions. We find not a single feature to have to point to in the way of a problem. 1849-D $5 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Well struck and lightly toned featuring a mixture of matte-like frost and semi-reflective mint luster. Very attractive! And a very rare coin in this lofty grade. Only 39,036 pieces struck. Pop 5; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 8242) .

The offering of early Dahlonega Mint gold in the sale, struck beginning in 1838 and extending for the next several decades, is one of the most exciting selection we have showcased at auction in some while. The Liberty head half eagle has a unique distinction not accorded any other United States coin type or denomination. Specimens were struck from time to time in each of the seven different United States mints in operation in the 19th century and early 20th century: Philadelphia, Carson City, Charlotte, Dahlonega, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.

1850-C $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61. Only 63,591 minted. Well struck and untoned. What is most in full view when we examine this coin is its swirling, soft-gold mint frost as though an integral part of the metallic content -- it bathes each side unhindered by digs or noticeable abrasions, best of all free of coppery tarnish. A coin with outward charm that will enliven any serious collection of rare early branch mint gold. In more respects than one, the dies left their rigid impression behind with only slight imprecision, only a few are ever found this way. Given the desirable grade, it never deviates from the strict standard used for this grade. Pop 4; 8 finer, 2 in 62, 2 in 63, 4 in 64 (PCGS # 8244) .

Bold centers are not normally encountered, making this piece far above average in aesthetic quality. Of importance to the specialist as well as to the general buyer are the peripheral details, including complete details of every star, except a couple which are slightly weak. 1870-CC $5 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. NGC holder 397368-001. Only 7,675 struck. A popular key date "CC" mint gold coin. Softly struck on the eagle's breast, and a small mark on Liberty's neck. Nice even toning, one can say nothing negative about it since it retains the charming "old gold" look which helps sway bidders to consider posting a bid.

This is the key to a set of Carson City Mint half eagles, and a date highly esteemed by gold connoisseurs for more than a century now. The 1870-CC $5 is rarely offered for sale in any grade. Above Extremely Fine it is a major find, and practically nonexistent in Uncirculated condition. Oddly, the few Mint State pieces known to exist lack eye appeal. The 1870-CC often possesses a weak strike at the eagle's neck down to the shield, and most examples are heavily abraded with marks and nicks. Finding a relatively problem-free specimen like the coin offered here, with better than average strike, is worth a considerable premium.

Carson City's gold coin production got off to a rather inauspicious start in 1870 when minting created only 17,372 half eagles, eagles, and double eagles combined, with a total face value of just $173,235. In comparison, the San Francisco Mint produced over one million gold coins that year with an aggregate face value of nearly $20 million! Bullion deposits were limited to what local miners brought in as Carson City's only duty was to the residents and mining operations in the region. San Francisco's mint had already been open 16 years at the time this half eagle was made. (For a lengthy, well researched account of the Carson Mint, we recommend to readers they acquire a copy of Rusty Goe's The Mint on Carson Street published by Southgate Coins and Collectibles.) 1893 $5 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 63 Deep Cameo. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides. Only 77 Proofs struck. As often occurs in the curious field of American numismatics, the commonness of business strike 1893 half eagles is more than counterbalanced by the low-mintage Proofs, which are today only rarely offered for sale. Of the few Proofs that were sold, today no more than pittance are extant in all grades. The following population figures show this explicitly. This lovely Proof 63 has well saturated orange patina over both sides that overlaps the reflectivity in the fields. Ultimately, the frosted devices give this piece its strong contrast with the moderately devices themselves being choice, fully dimensioned, and keen-edged in all the critical areas. Lot 4701
1908 $5 Indian. NGC graded Proof 66. Magnificent gem! 167 Proof minted. Collectors who first ordered the Indian half eagle Proofs were awe-struck when they received and examined their unusual sandblast coins. They were little prepared for the new appearance. Prior designs had been in the time-honored form of a satin relief set against a background of level mirror polish. Now, the devices were sunken into the field -- again extraordinary -- while the "fields" had become the high points and, further, were encrusted in a novel matte surface that gave them an even tone. Imagine, if you will, the effect on the collector of one hundred years ago this year. (Whoever invented the English language must have been a prose-writer, not a poet, for he has made meager provision for those who would write lyrics about this coin's infinite virtues and open beauty!)

The warm golden color of the 1908 pieces has a level of sandblast finish similar to the finish used in 1911-15, but it differs markedly in the 1909-10 half eagles. The coin we are describing here has been warily sheltered from scratch and hairline, and is struck with super-sharp clarity at all the inner devices. This is among the best examples available to collectors. Truly one among a privileged few. The coin has the edge over others in recent memory, and as such is mandatory that the bidder formulate a strong estimate before the bidding starts. He will be rewarded many times over if he wins the coin in the end. Pop 30; 12 finer; 11 in 67; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 8539) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 44,000.

1909-D $5 Indian. NGC graded MS-64. Frosty, well struck, and lightly toned. Attractive fields and devices (the frosy area continuing into the Indian's facial and neck features) with the amount of luster more than enough to cause the coin stagger under its weight; beautiful golden color. Broadly and well struck on the legends and main device, as well, which is an added benefit, with a bold amount of detail at the centers, on the feather ends, and throughout the eagle's chest and wings (PCGS # 8514) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,700.
